The ceremony which takes place annually in the Hiaki pueblo Loma Vahkom is known as "Kamiino Pahko." Kamiino is Spanish loan word. It comes from "camino," which mea road or path in Spanish. "Pahko" means "fiesta" or "ceremony" in our language. There is a little story to this very special "Pahko," which is cc brated in the month of July. The ceremony actually begins on June when the people from the other seven villages arrive at the respecti homes where a small ramada has been built. A kitchen will also be up where the "Principalim (Maehtos or Prayer Leaders), / the Principalim " Maalam/Kantooram, Kiyohteim Maalam and the Vandederas, as well as the Matachini Society members, will gather and take their meals from that point on until the Pahko is over. In the small ramada, an altar is placed and each village Kiyohtei will place the IJoly Figure of the Virgen onn the altar. That evening the "Teopo Yoemia" (Church officials) will offer their prayers. The Kantoras (Principalim Maalam) will sing the alavanzas. After the prayers, the Matachinim will offer their alavanzas as well. They will dance and after the dance is over, they will rest and retire for that evening_ If one arrives in Loma Vahkom,on that day, one will hear the sounds of the prayers and the voices of the Kantoras as they sing the alavanzas. After that, the sounds of the Matachinis can also be heard. The next day, on the 30th of June, the pueblo yoemia (villagers) from all the villages will begin to arrive. In the evening, each village group (The Teopo Yoemia and the - Matachinis) will take their places at the "Kuh Mayor," which is cross across the plaza from the church. From the church one will s the Teopo, Yoemia and the Matachinis emerging. They will cross t plaza carrying their Virgen under a canopy and accompanied by t Matachinis they make their way to the Kuh Mayor. The Virgen is c tied on a litter by the Tenanchis (four women who are wearing wh cloth and crowns on their heads) and a Vandedera'will head up t church group. The Maehto and the Kantoras walk behind the Virge The Matachinis dance in front of the church group. Here they ss meet the church representatives from each of the eight villages w are waiting to be escorted into the church. When the Vandederas me the other visiting Vandederas they will greet each other by wavi their flags. Then the crowns worn by the host church (Loma Vahkc church) Tenanchis are exchanged by the Kiyohteis, and the canopi are also exchanged. Then both groups make their way into the chur

while both groups of matachinis dance as they head toward the church. It is very colorful and beautiful to see. Each village church group and their matachini group are escorted into the church in this way. This is why the fiesta is known as the "Fiesta del Camino." The visiting church groups "caminar" (walk) into the church escorted by the local church group. The story behind this beautiful ceremony is that the Archangel Gabriel visited our Virgen Mother. He informed her that her cousin Isabel, wife of the prophet Zachary, and who was already up in year, and beyond childbearing years, was also pregnant. Our Holy Mother was pregnant with our Lord, Jesus Christ. Gabriel wanted to prove to Mary that for Our Creator, nothing was impossible. He told her that her cousin Isabel was great with child and was almost ready to deliver her child. Mary was simply overwhelmed with joy and she rushed to the city of "Hebron" to congratulate her cousin on this miraculous event. As Mary was approaching Isabel's home, Isabel heard her voice and upon hearing Mary's voice, the child in Isabel's womb moved as if he had experienced a moment of joy upon Mary's arrival and the sound of her voice. Isabel was so moved by Mary's visit that she exclaimed, "Blessed are you amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus!" "How is it that I am so blessed to have the Mother of Our Lord come to visit me?" Mary replied, "My heart glorifies My Lord and my spirit is in ectasy and joy because My Lord and my Savior has chosen this humble servant to deliver a child. From now on I will be called `Blessed' for generations to come." So the visitation of the Church officials and the Matachinim from each of the villages and now from Tucson to the church in Loma Vahkom commemorate the visitation of Mary to the home of her cousin Isabel.
