History

In 1997 the Tribal Council formally approved the establishment of the Traditional Healing Program; it was originally overseen by Dolores A. Flores who the center is now named after. A number of years later the Tribal Council approved additional funding to support the bringing of Traditional Healers from the Yoeme Pueblos in Sonora Mexico, to Tucson and Guadalupe to provide their services at the clinic.

Philosophy

Yoeme Traditional healing is defined by a practice that is inherently holistic in nature where nothing is compartmentalized or isolated. There is a relationship that develops between a client and healer based on trust and faith in the cultural and spiritual values of traditional healing.

There is no fee for services rendered during regular business hours. The Traditional healer’s utmost concern is to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of the patient. Their practice are based on keeping with cultural values, and similar to other complementary and alternative healing practices, on the relationship that develops between healer and the client. Communication defines this relationship and is a means to diagnosis.

Integrative Medicine Clinic

Dolores A Flores Hiak Hitevi Center

The Integrative Medicine Clinic provides services to the Pascua Yaqui Tribal Community by offering Naturopathic and Chiropractic care. Our intent is to support well-being and longevity by helping one achieve and maintain their health. We are general practitioners and so can help with many health issues including chronic conditions such as diabetes and chronic pain, as well as acute conditions such as colds, flu, and ankle sprains.

We use herbs, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, nutritional supplements, chiropractic adjustments and other treatments to help our patient’s bodies find their own innate balance. In other words, we strive to aid the body in healing itself.

Eligibility: Any Pascua Yaqui Tribal member, their spouse (or common law partner), and their minor dependents regardless of residence, and any Pascua Yaqui Tribal employee (does not include their non-tribal family members)

Philosophy of treatment

  • The Healing Power of Nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae): We strive to help identify and remove obstacles to healing and recovery, and to facilitate the inherent self-healing process.
  • Identify and Treat the Causes (Tolle Causam): We seek to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness rather than to merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.
  • First Do No Harm (Primum Non Nocere): We follow three guidelines to avoid harming the patient:
    • Utilize methods and medicinal substances which minimize the risk of harmful side effects;
    • Avoid when possible the harmful suppression of symptoms; and
    • Acknowledge, respect, and work with individuals’ self-healing process.
  • Doctor as Teacher (Docere): We educate our patients and encourage self-responsibility for health, and recognize and employ the therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient relationship.

  • Treat the Whole Person: We treat each patient by taking into account individual physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental, social, and other factors. Since total health also includes spiritual health, we encourage individuals to pursue their personal spiritual development.

  • Prevention: We emphasize the prevention of disease and aim to make appropriate interventions in partnership with our patients to prevent illness.
